Macomb Orchard Trail Birds

Take a winter walk on the Macomb Orchard trail. Discover beautiful trail birds.  From the hairy woodpecker to the many colorful finches.  The trail is a paradise of winged wonder. The best days are when the sun is hidden and a fresh snow fall has powdered the path. This is the time when you will see many of our feathered friends in the woodlands that outline the path.

The Macomb Orchard tail is a 24 mile long nature park. Its paved linear path is perfect for walking, hiking running and biking. The path was build on the footprint of the Canadian National Railway, from 24 Mile Road and Dequindre in Shelby Township to the northeast City of Richmond.

Great Lakes 94% Frozen and this is for diving ducks

Great Lakes 94% Frozen this is for the diving ducks

Of course only crazy photographers and bird watchers would venture out when the temps dropped to record lows to see the migration of diving ducks, near the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron Michigan.

Friday February 27,2015, The sun was shinning bright begging for all of us hibernating Michiganders to come out side and play. Then as we opened the door to the outside world  Mother Nature reminded us who was in charge as the temps dropped to record lows.  I bundled up with my military cold weather gear good to -40F below.  I thought I will be toasty warm during my photography  trip to Port Huron to see the migrating diving ducks, for the most part I was, but still felt the sting of the cold and concern for frost bite in the fingers, toes and nose. This is considered the kind of winter weather that can be deadly.

So how is it our feathered friends seem to thrive in the cold  open waters near the Port Huron Bridge . You think they would turn in to a block of ice. These diving ducks migrate to the open waters near the Blue Water Bridge in search of food.

The merganser male and female ducks paddle up the recently opened channel in the  St Clair river waters North to the edge of Lake Huron  ice flow and float back. On the way they seem to hop into the air and dive deep into the cold waters. As time passes you start to think they must have froze to death, as they disappear for long periods of time. Then all of a sudden you will see them pop to the surface with a morsel of food in their mouths.  Their feathers are coated in ice as the drops of water quickly freeze. They do not seem to mind the cold, but instead thrive.  The waters this time of year are clear and a blue turquoise green. You can see the bottom of the channel and the birds as they swim deep to pick up a zebra mussels that seem to be one of their favorite snacks.

These mergansers are joined by the Oldsquaw,  also known as the Long-tailed ducks. These ducks seem to express their opinion on the cold a little more. Or the one below has just developed a very cold stare.

Birch tree by the ocean

Hi!
I was looking for inspiration for a painting I have been working on for some time now ( a backyard fence; on my 3rd panel)
I left off with some birch trees and was considering putting a beach and bench chair..was told that birch do not grow anywhere near a beach…
While looking through landscape pictures I came cross yours with what I had somewhat visioned except steep hils, more birches and maybe some dunes
I was quite impressed with your picture! Since I was told it may look silly if I combined birch with ocean, I would put in a lake….
Well, wanted to let you know that you have given me inspiration for my mural and will once again consider my beach panel…I live an hr. away from cape cod and with our frigid and snowy winters, I so desperately crave my summers. This is what I’ve done for me because everyone needs a little joy in their life.
I wanted to write and thank you for your picture!
Sincerely,
Robyne

Soon it will be tulip time

Tulip 3 RedOne always gets thrilled after a long cold winter in Michigan when they see the first signs of spring. Today we saw our first Fat Robin and noticed the trees have the beginnings of buds. Soon tulip time will be back in Michigan and with it the promise of warmer days. This gives us all hope as the temperatures are predicted to stay in the low 20F range for the last week in February. May March bring us brighter and warmer days. Until then here is a distant memory to remind you that spring is on its way.

Cold Merganser Port Huron Michigan

Cold Merganser at McLaneGoetzStudioLLC.com
Cold Merganser at McLaneGoetzStudioLLC.com

Michigan has been cold. So cold that a large percentage 85% + of the Great Lakes are frozen over. This means open water is a rare site, and the birds that need open water as a food source are relocating to wherever the open water can be found. Port Huron, Michigan near the Blue Water Bridge is one of the largest areas currently with open water.  This is were you can see some of the rare birds like the Merganser.

Looking for the 1st Robin of Spring

1st robin of spring
1st robin of spring

After a record snowfall and cold winter season in Michigan, I and many of my fellow Michigan friends are looking for that 1st Robin of Spring. Given that I saw one today I am hopeful that this cold weather will soon come to an end and green grass and warmer temps will once more make going outside fun again. If you also have seen a Robin please report it, and the location so that others may be inspired to Think Spring.
